Dolly Levi, a matchmaker, wants to marry Horace, a wealthy merchant. Dolly is generous and helps people all the time, and Horace is a stingy mean-spirit person who doesn't love anybody. He wants to marry a woman who will clean his house. He tells Dolly he is going to New York to marry Irene Molloy, a pretty New York hat maker. He asks Dolly to take his daughter to New York to get her away from her boyfriend. The clerks who work for Horace decide to visit New York to look for girlfriends.
